Full Description

During a routine surgical shift, Radar O’Reilly bursts into the operating room with life-changing news: Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake has earned enough service points to be discharged and sent home. The announcement sends ripples through the camp. Henry is elated and immediately calls his wife in Bloomington, Illinois, to share the news. Meanwhile, Majors Frank Burns and Margaret Houlihan privately celebrate, assuming Frank will take command of the 4077th. As Henry begins packing, Radar visits him for a quiet moment of gratitude. He gifts Henry an inscribed Winchester cartridge, calling him a father figure. Touched, Henry reciprocates with a rectal thermometer that once belonged to his own father—a moment of absurd tenderness that encapsulates their bond. That night, Hawkeye, Trapper, and Radar throw Henry a raucous farewell party at Rosie’s Bar, complete with drinks, laughter, and a custom-tailored civilian suit. The next morning, Frank attempts to stage a formal send-off, but the camp’s irreverence prevails: Hawkeye and Trapper arrive unshaven and out of uniform, and Klinger wears an elaborate dress designed for the occasion. Henry arrives in his new suit, and after a few final jabs at Frank’s rigidity, he prepares to board the helicopter. At Hawkeye’s urging, Henry gives Margaret a long, theatrical goodbye kiss, leaving Frank fuming. The staff escorts Henry to the helipad, where he boards a chopper already carrying a wounded soldier. Ever the doctor, Henry tries to assist before being nudged aside. He spots Radar saluting him from a distance and walks over for a final embrace before flying off. Later, in the operating room, Radar reappears—visibly shaken. Hawkeye and Trapper joke as usual, but Radar interrupts with grim news: Henry’s plane was shot down over the Sea of Japan. There were no survivors. The room falls silent as the staff absorbs the shock, then quietly resumes their work, embodying the emotional resilience that defines the series. The episode closes with a montage of Henry’s most memorable moments, offering a bittersweet farewell to a beloved character and signaling a tonal shift in MASH’s storytelling—from ensemble comedy to character-driven drama.
