Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?

Title Inspiration

The title “Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?” is a direct reference to the Latin phrase Quo vadis?, which means “Where are you going?” or “Whither goest thou?” The phrase comes from early Christian tradition: Peter, fleeing Rome during Nero’s persecution, sees a vision of Jesus. Peter asks: “Quo vadis, Domine?” (“Where are you going, Lord?”) Jesus’s answer sends Peter back to Rome to face his fate. The episode title uses that same framing to point at Captain Chandler’s psychological break: he believes he’s Jesus Christ, wandering into the war zone looking for purpose. The title becomes a layered question: Where are you going, Captain Chandler? Where is your mind going? Where is your soul going amid the madness of war? It’s also a nod to the 1951 film Quo Vadis, based on Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novel, both of which explore themes of identity, persecution, and moral direction, all of which map cleanly onto Chandler’s storyline. So the inspiration is: • the Latin phrase “Quo vadis?” • the biblical/Christian origin story associated with Peter and Jesus • and the cultural resonance of the novel/film about identity, suffering, and purpose Perfect fit for one of the most psychologically intense episodes of the series.
