Illustrator Save As Was Selectable During an Active Save but Then Rejected

One production-workflow occurrence preserves the visible rejection, repeated-retry burden, and the distinction between normal active saving and a stalled save.

Privacy boundary: the raw screenshot and any private artwork or file information remain private.

What happened

  1. The contributor initiated Save on an open Illustrator document.
  2. While that Save was still active, the contributor selected File > Save As.
  3. Illustrator displayed: “The document is currently getting saved. Try again after the process is complete.”
  4. The contributor dismissed the modal and had to retry Save As until Illustrator became available.

Why this matters

The user had already expressed the next intended operation. The application did not preserve it and instead assigned the person the tasks of waiting, monitoring save state, remembering the filename/location/format intent, reopening the command, and trying again. The contributor reports this happens several times per day.

Evidence and limits

  • A direct screenshot establishes the exact Illustrator message.
  • Contributor testimony supports the action sequence, recurrence, and workflow burden.
  • An independent Adobe-hosted report describes materially similar behavior and asks for later Save As to wait for the current Save.
  • No file corruption or data loss occurred in this bounded Incident.
  • The record does not establish Adobe's internal cause, every affected version, or population prevalence.
Separate mechanisms: Photoshop, Close during Save, preservation of the first Save, and stalled background-save recovery are tracked in separate Evaluations because similar timing does not prove one implementation.

Current workaround

Wait for the first Save to finish, dismiss the modal if it appears, and retry Save As. This is recoverable but manually burdensome and does not preserve the user's intent.

Adobe: respond or add evidence

An authorized representative may correct the sequence, identify current behavior or affected versions, explain constraints, provide test evidence, document reform, or request verification.

Useful context includes Illustrator version, operating system, storage location, whether Save As was selectable, exact message, whether the original Save completed, and how many retries were required. Do not expose private artwork, file names, or customer data.
