Illustrator Fixed a Blocking “Close While Saving” Dialog. Does the Reform Still Hold?

Illustrator Close During an Active Background Save

Adobe changed a blocking interaction so the application could preserve the user's Close intent while saving continued.

Why this record remains active: reform evidence deserves preservation, verification, later recheck, and honest regression tracking. This Evaluation is separate from Save As, stalled saves, and active-save cancellation.

What changed

Adobe Illustrator UserVoice records a complaint that Command-S followed by Command-W produced a blocking dialog requiring an extra acknowledgment. Adobe Illustrator team staff later said the dialog was removed in Illustrator 24.1/24.1.1 and replaced with a new experience.

Why this matters

The improved pattern lets the user express “close this after it safely finishes saving” once. The application retains that intent instead of making the person acknowledge a modal and manage the save state repeatedly.

Current findings

Positive reform evidence: Adobe publicly acknowledged the complaint and reported shipping a nonblocking close-during-save change.

Historical negative finding: the older interaction imposed a blocking confirmation and did not reliably preserve the intended close in some reported versions.

Limit: later comments reported edge cases and related saving problems. Those reports limit any claim that every while-saving workflow was fixed, but they do not erase the documented close-specific reform.

Evidence and limits

  • Evidence comes from Adobe-hosted UserVoice reports and Adobe team responses beginning in 2019–2020.
  • The exact current behavior still needs version-specific verification.
  • This record does not treat an old release note as permanent proof that the reform still works everywhere.
  • Save As and save-cancellation behavior remain separate Evaluations.

Acceptance and recheck test

Start a valid Illustrator background Save and invoke Close once. Illustrator completes the active Save and closes the document automatically without a blocking OK, repeated Close commands, or manual polling. If saving fails, the document remains open with a clear recoverable failure state rather than silent work loss.

What could strengthen or challenge this record?

  • Current-version tests on supported operating systems.
  • Adobe implementation or regression-test evidence.
  • Verified edge cases where Close fails to complete after saving.
  • Evidence that the behavior was further improved or regressed.

Adobe: document current status

An authorized representative may confirm the current implementation, clarify affected versions, provide verification evidence, report a regression, or request HXR re-verification.

Useful context includes Illustrator version, OS, one active Save, one Close request, whether a blocking message appeared, and whether the document closed automatically after the Save. Remove private file and client information.
