HXR Evaluation
Google’s Nest System Did Not Carry Out a Clear User Request
A contributor repeatedly asked a Google Nest display for a large, silent clock. The device displayed the request correctly but did not provide the requested result, raising questions about whether Google gives users an effective way to control the experience.

What changed in Public Revision 1
Public Revision 1 publishes the first organization-level Evaluation derived from UXR-2026-0817-0001 while preserving unresolved internal responsibility and the one-incident evidence boundary.
What this evaluation covers
These canonical Entity references identify the products, systems, organizations, units, and other durable subjects covered by this Evaluation. Inclusion does not by itself establish responsibility or credit.
Public-eligible organizations, products, services, departments, and workflows in this Evaluation's scope. Inclusion identifies subject and provider context only; it does not by itself establish responsibility, internal ownership, fault, motive, or prevalence.

Evaluation scope
Google’s organization-level responsibility for the integrated user-facing Nest pathway evidenced by UXR-2026-0817-0001: device behavior, assistant interaction, presentation modality, limitation disclosure, responsibility routing, and correction. This does not identify a specific Google team, model, backend service, technical root cause, or company-wide prevalence.
Question being evaluated
How effectively does Google provide a consequential pathway from clearly recognized human intent to supported Nest device behavior, including requested presentation modality, without requiring the user to understand or navigate internal product architecture?
Current findings
What works well or deserves recognition
The reported device provided visible speech-transcription feedback and possessed a large clock presentation immediately before the failed request path. These are useful component capabilities without proving they are exposed as controllable assistant actions.
Difficulties and opportunities to improve
In the supporting Incident, repeated correctly transcribed instructions did not demonstrate an effective pathway to the requested large visual-only time presentation. The contributor could speak, clarify, and rephrase but did not obtain consequential control over the requested display/output behavior.
Mixed or conditional findings
A user-facing failure can exist without establishing that any one Google component or team caused it. Later evidence may reattribute technical control while preserving separately supported organization-level integration, disclosure, routing, or remedy responsibilities.
Evidence coverage and limits
Currently supported by one contributor-authorized public Incident Case and its contributor-testimony evidence. Exact device model, active assistant implementation, internal control ownership, prevalence, and technical root cause remain unresolved. No formal Google response has been received.
How the evidence connects
One bounded Incident supports this organization Evaluation, the related Nest product Evaluation, and the recognized-intent execution mechanism Evaluation. These are three analytical lenses on one occurrence, not three independent incidents.

Agency dimensions
Acceptance / benchmark test
For supported Nest objectives, a clearly recognized natural-language instruction should reach the control capable of performing the requested behavior or the system should accurately disclose the limitation and provide a usable alternative. User-specified response modality should be honored when supported, and responsibility routing should not require the user to diagnose internal Google architecture.
Organization response
No formal Google response to UXR has been received.
Next observation or verification
Identify the exact Nest model and assistant implementation; capture authoritative Google documentation or response as separate evidence; add matching and contradictory incidents; and test later software behavior for reform or regression.
