HXR Evaluation
Google Nest Clock Became Hard to Read and Could Not Be Restored by Voice
A contributor could read a large clock from across the room until the display dimmed. Asking the device to restore a large, silent clock instead produced small text and spoken audio.

What changed in Public Revision 1
Public Revision 1 publishes the first Nest product Evaluation from UXR-2026-0817-0001 while preserving uncertainty about the exact model and dimming cause.
What this evaluation covers
These canonical Entity references identify the products, systems, organizations, units, and other durable subjects covered by this Evaluation. Inclusion does not by itself establish responsibility or credit.
Public-eligible organizations, products, services, departments, and workflows in this Evaluation's scope. Inclusion identifies subject and provider context only; it does not by itself establish responsibility, internal ownership, fault, motive, or prevalence.

Evaluation scope
Google Nest smart-display clock legibility, ambient/display-state transitions, and the ability to invoke an appropriately readable time presentation. The exact hardware model is not yet established. This Evaluation does not cover all Nest functions or establish the cause of the reported dimming.
Question being evaluated
How well does a Google Nest smart display preserve a legible clock under ordinary room-use conditions and make its existing large-clock presentation practically addressable when a user wants to determine the time visually from across the room?
Current findings
What works well or deserves recognition
The contributor reports that the product provides a large clock presentation that was legible from across the room. That existing capability supplies a concrete acceptance target without requiring invention of a new display function.
Difficulties and opportunities to improve
The supporting Incident shows a mismatch between a useful large-clock state that existed and the presentation the user could obtain on demand through the attempted natural interface. The reported timing of the dimming also defeated the immediate glance-at-clock objective, although causation by presence is not established.
Mixed or conditional findings
The dimming may reflect ambient-light behavior, low-light behavior, presence-related state change, another software transition, or coincidental timing. No specific cause is assigned without reproduction or independent support.
Evidence coverage and limits
Currently supported by one contributor-authorized public Incident Case and contributor testimony. Exact Nest model/configuration, reproducibility of the dimming, actual trigger, and direct voice addressability of the full-screen clock remain unresolved.
How the evidence connects
The same Incident that supports this product Evaluation also supports the related Google organization Evaluation and recognized-intent execution mechanism Evaluation. The shared dependency is explicit so one occurrence is not mistaken for three incidents.

- UXR-2026-0817-0001: Google Nest Recognized a Visual-Only Time Request but Did Not Restore the Large Clock or Suppress Speech
Agency dimensions
Acceptance / benchmark test
With the device configured to show a clock, ordinary room entry or approach should not unnecessarily make the time unreadable. A request to display the time should provide a legible visual presentation suitable to across-room use, ideally invoking the same or functionally equivalent large-clock state. If a legitimate constraint prevents that behavior, the system should make the limitation understandable and provide a usable alternative.
Organization response
No formal Google response to UXR has been received.
Next observation or verification
Identify the exact Nest model and configuration, attempt controlled reproduction of the dimming and voice-invocation behavior, and capture authoritative Google documentation or later product behavior as separate evidence.
