Everyday Controls: Light Switches and Micro-Friction
How small design regressions consume time and attention across repeated everyday interactions.
A light switch illustrates micro-friction because the objective is simple, frequent, and well understood: make a light turn on, turn off, or dim.
A control can become less legible when its physical state no longer communicates the light's state, multiple switches control the same fixture, dimming uses a small secondary control, or operation requires trial and correction in a dark room. Each interaction may cost only seconds, but repeated uncertainty consumes attention and interrupts flow.
The lesson is not that everyone should replace a functioning switch immediately. Replacement itself has costs. The UXR question is whether new installation, routine replacement, or future product design should preserve the clearest known interaction rather than normalize a regression.
Agency preserved: immediate comprehension, predictable operation, tactile usability, low cognitive demand.
Tradeoffs to examine: electrical safety, multi-location control, dimming capability, accessibility, installation cost, and compatibility.
