UXR as a Developing Scientific Framework

How UXR applies a core analytical sequence, domain-specific interpretation, quantitative caution, and scientific discipline without overstating methods that remain under development.

UXR is also a developing scientific framework.

That statement describes a method and a commitment. It does not claim that UXR already possesses validated measures, settled baselines, completed scoring weights, or a mature operational evidence corpus.

What UXR Studies

UXR studies interactions between human beings and human-made systems of every kind. Those systems may be:

  • physical or infrastructural;
  • administrative or institutional;
  • legal or economic;
  • digital or automated.

Universal scope is an obligation to remain open, not a claim that UXR already possesses complete knowledge or one method suitable for every domain.

The Core Analytical Sequence

  1. Observation: Define the person's objective and conditions. Record the events, measurable or supportable costs, and outcome.
  2. Explanation: Test possible mechanisms and alternatives. Examine incentives, institutional control, causation, and uncertainty.
  3. Evaluation: Examine necessity and proportionality. Consider burden distribution, practical agency, recoverability, responsibility, and corrective paths.

This is the core analytical sequence, not the complete UXR lifecycle.

A future operational lifecycle may include:

Receive → Preserve → Observe → Explain → Evaluate → Respond → Reform → Verify → Learn

Evidence and Moral Judgment Remain Distinct

Lived experience can identify effects, patterns, and questions. It does not automatically prove every factual, causal, legal, or moral claim.

Recognition is not automatic adjudication. UXR can recognize an account as eligible for examination without accepting every interpretation attached to it.

Silence is also ambiguous. Low complaint volume proves neither satisfaction nor resignation without further evidence.

Likewise, a measurable burden does not automatically prove malicious intent. A strong causal finding does not automatically determine the only lawful or ethical remedy.

What Can Be Measured

Potential measures include:

  • time lost and repeated work;
  • transfers and failed contacts;
  • delay, abandonment, and error rates;
  • accessibility barriers and correction success;
  • outcome changes, risk, and lost opportunity.

Some dimensions, including dignity and agency, may require observable indicators, structured qualitative evidence, and multi-dimensional assessment rather than one direct number.

Current Quantitative Status

UXR currently has quantitative principles, not a validated quantitative instrument. It can define responsible measurement requirements and illustrate population-scale consequences. It does not yet possess a universal formula, settled weighting model, or accepted method for converting every burden into a common unit.

Future uncertainty reporting may require ranges, quantiles, lower-bound estimates, sensitivity analysis, uncertainty bands, confidence categories, intervals, or other methods appropriate to the evidence. UXR should not require one statistical display before the data and model justify it.

Universal Core and Domain-Specific Methods

Future methods should distinguish four layers:

  1. Universal principles: agency, dignity, necessary burden, contestability, remedy, causal humility, capability, and equal application.
  2. Cross-domain assessment dimensions: time, cognition, access, safety, reversibility, alternatives, evidence confidence, scale, duration, urgency, and recoverability.
  3. Domain interpretation layers: what timely, safe, accessible, proportionate, or recoverable means in a particular field.
  4. System-specific acceptance tests: observable conditions for the exact failure or reform under review.

What Must Be Tested

  • validity and reliability of measurements;
  • comparison baselines and domain-specific differences;
  • causal inference standards;
  • measurement error and missing data;
  • anti-gaming safeguards;
  • fairness across populations;
  • whether future scores predict outcomes people actually value.

Scientific Humility

UXR should never call a result mathematically undeniable merely because it uses numbers. Quantification can conceal assumptions as easily as it can reveal patterns.

UXR must publish uncertainty, limitations, version changes, correction paths, and failures in its own methods.
