Who qualifies
Private families with gross household income under $40,000 per year. Cats and dogs only. The program does not serve rescues or individual rescuers. Its spay/neuter program does not serve feral cats.
What it can do
The Free Surgery Clinic lists procedures including amputations, selected eye surgeries, hernia repairs, mass procedures and bladder-stone surgery, among other surgeries performed at the veterinarian's discretion. For non-spay/neuter surgery, the pet must already be sterilized or be sterilized at the same surgery unless the clinic veterinarian advises otherwise.
Vaccines and microchips are available only while a pet is already receiving surgery. The clinic does not offer them as separate appointments.
Important limits
This program provides free surgery directly to qualifying households. It does not provide cash grants, discounted care for households that do not qualify, general exams, routine diagnostics, x-rays or general emergency care.
The current spay/neuter page lists an approximate 4-6 month wait. A September 28 clinic auto-response says a closure during most of June 2026 increased the backlog and no appointment timing is guaranteed. It also says the clinic runs two high-volume spay/neuter days per month. Free Surgery Clinic cases are prioritized by medical urgency.
How to apply
Submit one official application per pet. Do not submit a duplicate application for a pet already on the waitlist. For Free Surgery Clinic cases, the official FAQ also instructs applicants to leave a complete message on the automated 1-888-364-7729 line. Proof of qualifying income is required.
Where it operates
All dates on the official September 2026 calendar are at 2227 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90065, in Lincoln Heights. The clinic says it does not schedule spay/neuter surgery for applicants living more than 25 miles from the current clinic location. The mobile schedule can change, so check the current calendar before traveling. This is not a home-visit service.
