Illustrator Fixed a Blocking “Close While Saving” Dialog — Does the Reform Still Hold?

Adobe changed a related while-saving workflow so Close could be preserved while the save finished; HXR tracks that reform separately from Save As and stalled-save behavior. Adobe Illustrator UserVoice records a widely supported complaint that Command-S followed by Command-W produced a blocking dialog requiring an extra OK before the document would close. Adobe Illustrator team staff responded that the dialog was removed in Illustrator 24.1/24.1.1 and replaced with a new experience. Later comments reported edge cases, but the record demonstrates a concrete Adobe reform of a closely related while-saving interaction. This Evaluation is kept separate from Save As because the user objective and implementation path may differ.

Evaluation scope

Includes Illustrator Close/Command-W behavior while a valid background Save is active, especially historical blocking-dialog behavior and Adobe's later soft/deferred-close reform. Excludes Save As initiation, save cancellation by subsequent save requests, stalled saves, Photoshop, and generic application shutdown behavior.

When the user asks to close an Illustrator document while its Save is still in progress, does Illustrator preserve the Close intent and complete it automatically when safe without a blocking confirmation/retry loop?

Current findings

What works well or deserves recognition

Adobe explicitly responded to the UserVoice complaint and shipped a nonblocking/soft-message change in Illustrator 24.1/24.1.1. That reform is a positive example of letting the application retain user intent while a save finishes rather than making the person repeatedly manage save state.

Difficulties and opportunities to improve

Historically, a Close request during saving imposed an extra blocking acknowledgement and could fail to preserve the intended close automatically in some reported versions.

Mixed findings and limits

Some post-fix comments reported that the document did not always close as promised or that related Save/Save As problems remained. Those reports limit any claim that all while-saving workflows were fixed. They do not erase the documented close-specific reform.

How HXR would test performance

Start a valid Illustrator background Save and immediately invoke Close once. Illustrator completes the active Save and closes the document automatically without requiring a blocking OK, repeated Close commands, or manual polling. If the save fails, the application keeps the document open and gives a clear recoverable failure state rather than silently losing work.
