Illustrator Gets Stuck “Saving” and Blocks Save, Save As, and Save a Copy

Recent users report a persistent saving state that can last far beyond a normal save and leave force quit or file reconstruction as the only apparent escape. Recent Adobe Community reports around Illustrator 29.7.1 and later describe documents remaining stuck in a saving state, with Save, Save As, and Save a Copy blocked and some users forced to quit, recover, copy work to new files, or use alternate export paths. Adobe Community Managers asked for version/storage details and stated that the product team attempted a fix in an Illustrator beta. The visible error text can match the ordinary Save As rejection seen in the main Incident, but the duration, recovery path, and likely failure mechanism are materially different, so HXR keeps this as a separate related Evaluation.

What this page means: Evaluations examine how a product, organization, or practice affects people. Cases and other evidence can establish strengths, difficulties, mixed outcomes, and useful improvements. Counts describe the record; they do not establish prevalence or responsibility.

Who and what this Evaluation covers

Naming an organization, product, service, or workflow identifies the subject of this Evaluation. It does not by itself prove which internal team caused or controls the issue.

Evaluation scope

Includes recent Illustrator reports where the document remains in a persistent Saving state, Save/Save As/Save a Copy are unavailable or rejected, progress does not complete, and users resort to force quit, recovery files, copying artwork, alternate formats, or restarts. Excludes ordinary short-lived background Saves that complete normally, the main Save As request-handling question, close-after-save behavior, and historical active-save cancellation.

Question being evaluated

When an Illustrator background Save stops making progress or remains stuck in a saving state, can the user identify the failure, stop or recover from it, and return to a trustworthy save state without force quitting, copying work into a new file, or risking loss?

Current findings

What works well or deserves recognition

Adobe representatives actively requested diagnostic context and reported that the product team attempted a fix in a beta release. Illustrator's background-save UI can expose progress and Stop Save in some states, providing a basis for recoverable failure handling when it works.

Difficulties and opportunities to improve

A stalled saving state can prevent normal save commands for minutes or hours, interfere with paid/professional work, create file confusion, force restarts or recovery-file reliance, and create risk of losing unsaved changes. The same message used for a normal active save can obscure the difference between 'wait briefly' and 'the save is not progressing.'

Mixed findings and limits

The recent reports include local, network, cloud, and external storage contexts and may not share one cause. Some files recover correctly after force quit; others report lost time or file confusion. These differences must remain visible rather than being collapsed into one storage or product defect claim.

How HXR would test performance

Induce or simulate a background-save failure. Illustrator detects lack of progress or an error, clearly distinguishes it from normal saving, offers a working stop/retry/recovery path, preserves the document's unsaved changes, and returns Save/Save As/Save a Copy to a trustworthy state without requiring force quit. Recovery behavior is verified across affected storage contexts rather than inferred from one environment.

Evidence coverage and limits

Helpful context, when available

Illustrator version, OS, file/storage location, approximate file size, how long Saving persisted, whether progress moved, which save commands were blocked, whether Stop Save worked, and what happened after restart/recovery.
