Review: El Royale (Lake Tahoe, CA/NV)

The Good:
The acoustics in the lounge are surprisingly decent for a place that smells like damp carpet and desperate choices. If you can ignore the vacuum hum, the resonance is perfect for a quick rehearsal. Also, the "dual-state" gimmick is a fun conversation starter—I spent the first twenty minutes with my left foot in California and my right foot in Nevada, which is about the only thing in this building that isn't a federal crime.
The Bad:
Privacy is... non-existent. I’m a professional singer; I’m used to an audience, but I prefer them to be in the front row, not watching me through a two-way mirror in the wall. The "amenities" include a hidden hallway for voyeurs and a management staff consisting of one very stressed-out kid who looks like he hasn't slept since the Eisenhower administration.
The room was dusty, the jukebox is a relic, and the other "guests" are incredibly high-maintenance. One guy spent the whole night tearing up the floorboards looking for a bag of money, and a vacuum salesman tried to wiretap my telephone. If you're looking for a quiet night's sleep without a cult leader showing up to ruin the vibe, keep driving.
