UXR examines human-system vulnerabilities that conventional audits may miss.
Bad Design Creates Structural Exposure
When a process becomes too slow, confusing, inaccessible, or repetitive, people create workarounds to accomplish legitimate work.
Those workarounds can become security, safety, privacy, compliance, recordkeeping, reliability, and accessibility failures.
A door-control sequence that causes employees to prop the door open is not only a usability defect. It is a security vulnerability created by friction.
What a UXR-Informed Audit Could Examine
- the time and effort required to complete a legitimate objective;
- where people abandon, bypass, or workaround the official process;
- whether friction serves safety, consent, accuracy, or due process;
- whether burden has been transferred downstream;
- whether records and context survive across channels and departments;
- whether correction and escalation paths work under stress;
- whether metrics reward resolution or merely improve reported numbers;
- and whether the system treats accessibility as a core operating requirement.
Not Yet an Audit Standard
UXR does not yet offer a completed certification, scoring rubric, audit protocol, or Blue Zone standard.
This page identifies a future application and invites people with audit and quality expertise to help define what evidence, sampling, controls, repeatability, and independence a credible UXR audit would require.
A Human Agency Penetration Test
A useful development exercise may attempt ordinary objectives under realistic constraints, document the visible and hidden costs, identify workarounds, and test whether the institution fixes the root cause or only blocks the workaround.
Such testing must remain lawful, ethical, safe, authorized where necessary, and designed to avoid harming people or systems.
