ChatGPT Read Aloud While Generating: Listen Before the Response Finishes
Text mode with audio playback: read stable response text aloud while ChatGPT is still working, without switching to Voice Mode. The August 24 contributor reports that while ChatGPT was still executing a longer task, readable progress text was already on screen but Read Aloud was unavailable until the full assistant turn/task completed. The contributor wanted to listen while doing another physical task and does not regard live Voice Mode as equivalent because their preferred input workflow uses editable dictation/text with long thinking pauses and revision before submission. An independent Reddit report describes the same user-facing sequence in ordinary language: waiting for a response to finish generating before being able to select Read Aloud, and asks for reading to begin as the response is generated. Another 2026 Reddit report asks for “text mode with automatic voice output” and explicitly distinguishes it from Advanced Voice Mode. OpenAI documents Read Aloud as a ChatGPT response action but the inspected first-party documentation does not state whether it should be available before generation completes. The current evidence supports a specific output-modality opportunity without establishing technical cause or all-client prevalence.

Who and what this Evaluation covers
Naming an organization, product, service, or workflow identifies the subject of this Evaluation. It does not by itself prove which internal team caused or controls the issue.
- Organization in scope
- OpenAI
- Product, service, or workflow
- ChatGPT — Read Aloud
Evaluation scope
Includes ChatGPT ordinary Text Mode output where assistant progress or response text is already visibly delivered while remaining generation, reasoning, tool use, or task execution continues. Includes availability and timing of the Read Aloud action, starting playback on stable delivered text, continued execution while playback occurs, and Text Mode workflows that may use editable dictation for input. Excludes audio quality/static after playback begins, which is covered by UXR-EVAL-0014; excludes evaluation of live Voice Mode quality or turn-taking; excludes unsupported internal streaming/TTS architecture claims and universal all-platform behavior.
Question being evaluated
Can stable assistant text already delivered in ordinary ChatGPT Text Mode be played through Read Aloud while the remainder of the response or longer-running task continues, without requiring full completion or forcing the user into live Voice Mode?
Current findings
What works well or deserves recognition
ChatGPT already provides Read Aloud as an official response action, making audio a supported output path for text conversations. OpenAI's current release notes also document progressively rendered content in some ChatGPT experiences, demonstrating a broader product direction in which usable output can appear before the complete artifact or task is finished. Ordinary editable text/dictation remains valuable because it lets users inspect and revise input before sending.
Difficulties and opportunities to improve
In the contributor-observed context, stable readable progress text existed while the task remained active but Read Aloud was not yet available, forcing the user either to visually attend to the screen or wait for completion before listening. An independent Reddit user separately describes waiting for generation to finish before selecting Read Aloud and asks for audio to begin during generation. The coupling limits the usefulness of text-mode audio for walking, chores, accessibility, and other attention-sharing contexts.
Mixed findings and limits
Audio playback cannot responsibly read text that is still unstable or likely to be rewritten, so the acceptance condition is deliberately limited to stable/delivered text segments rather than requiring speech for speculative tokens. Playback may reasonably trail displayed text and may need queueing or segmentation. The requested workflow remains ordinary Text Mode: the user retains editable composition and controls when an input is submitted. Live Voice Mode may serve different users well but is not an equivalent substitute for this Evaluation's input/output boundary.
How HXR would test performance
Start a ChatGPT Text Mode interaction that produces stable visible assistant text while additional generation or longer-running work remains active. Once a stable text segment has been delivered, the user can start Read Aloud for that delivered content without waiting for the entire assistant turn/task to finish. Playback does not cancel, redirect, or otherwise alter the active work. At minimum, the already-delivered segment can be heard; a stronger implementation may automatically queue newly stabilized segments for continuous follow-along playback. The user remains in ordinary Text Mode, including editable text or dictation input and user-controlled submission timing; live Voice Mode is not required. Audio-quality requirements after playback begins remain governed separately by UXR-EVAL-0014.
Evidence coverage and limits

Next observation or verification
Test later ChatGPT releases for Read Aloud availability before complete turn finalization and preserve any verified reform. Add independent current-version reports and official statements when found. Track audio-quality behavior under UXR-EVAL-0014 rather than merging it here.
