ChatGPT — Read Aloud Evaluations and Incident reports

Text mode with audio playback: read stable response text aloud while ChatGPT is still working, without switching to Voice Mode. The August 24 contributor reports that while ChatGPT was still executing a longer task, readable progress text was already on screen but Read Aloud was unavailable until the full assistant turn/task completed. The contributor wanted to listen while doing another physical task and does not regard live Voice Mode as equivalent because their preferred input workflow uses editable dictation/text with long thinking pauses and revision before submission. An independent Reddit report describes the same user-facing sequence in ordinary language: waiting for a response to finish generating before being able to select Read Aloud, and asks for reading to begin as the response is generated. Another 2026 Reddit report asks for “text mode with automatic voice output” and explicitly distinguishes it from Advanced Voice Mode. OpenAI documents Read Aloud as a ChatGPT response action but the inspected first-party documentation does not state whether it should be available before generation completes. The current evidence supports a specific output-modality opportunity without establishing technical cause or all-client prevalence.

An anonymous HXR contributor reports a recurring ChatGPT Read Aloud problem: an ordinary phone interruption can stop or strand playback, and the observed experience provides no practical way to continue from the prior listening position. Recovery can require restarting Read Aloud, repeatedly using the 15-second forward control, and additional phone/app navigation when hands-free use has been lost. The contributor estimates roughly two minutes or more of recovery work per interruption and says the pattern can occur several times per day. Independent public reports describe materially similar restart-from-beginning or failed-resume behavior. HXR does not infer a common technical cause, population prevalence, or behavior across every current ChatGPT platform or version.

HXR is evaluating whether ChatGPT Read Aloud maintains stable, intelligible audio throughout continuous playback. One contributor reports progressively worsening static after roughly 60–90 seconds of continuous listening, with clean playback temporarily restored by restarting or reseeking.
